The Future of Literature - Juha Tarvainen, Ellibs

The field of literature has been undergoing major technological changes in recent decades; first came e-books, then audiobooks, and now generative language models have revolutionized our thinking about how to produce, edit, and share literary material.

Juha Tarvainen sits in a particularly good position to look at all these changes. He has made a career in literature and language technologies, and is currently the CEO of Ellibs that develops services for the National Library of Finland's E-library.

Arado has been involved in the development of the E-library application. In this interview, however, we decided to focus on wider horizons, and so we discussed with Juha the future of literature, the importance of writers in the post-LLM era and, on the other hand, how technology diversifies the production and distribution of literature.

Thanks for listening!

Ed. note. The episode was recorded in the summer before the European Accessibility Directive came into force.. The European Accessibility Directive entered into force on 28 June 2025.
